Downwind Foiling Point Addis Run - After The Front
Просмотров 16910 месяцев назад
Downwind SUP foiling run from Point Addis to Torquay front beach. Polar fronts in the winter lows bring squally, icy winds that change strength and direction. This day the front hit mid afternoon and the SW change only lasted a short amount of time before returning to the west. The wind was backing off even as I paddled out at the start, so conditions were pretty light yet I still had a nice ru...
Danger Loops - Prone Foil Surfing at its funnest!

An epic day doing loops on the foil. High tides, clean small groundswell, glassy conditions and a sunny day. It doesn't get much better! Takeoff behind the point, foil across, around the point and down the beach for 2-3 minutes per ride, then walk or jog over the point back and jump back in at the takeoff. Conditions were so fun I did 7 or 8 loops. Equipment I'm riding: Axis ART 999 front wing ...

Downwind SUP Foiling - Axis ART899

First downwind run on the Axis Foils ART899 went exactly as expected. Lift off speed is slightly higher than the ART999, so it took a couple of extra strokes to paddle up. Once up there was less drag than the 999, so it was better for chasing down and overtaking the bumps in front. Ultrashort Red Advance fuse & p325 or p350 tail. That fuse gives you the best control and those two tails give it enough lift and turn good enough for a big wing.

    Awesome video Jeff! Thanks for sharing! I've started my journey to get into downwind foiling but was wondering if my PNG1150 (which I use for dockstart pumpfoiling) would be maybe to slow. You showed me it actually works perfect! No need to buy another foil (for now)! 😊

    • @Jeff_Rowley
      @Jeff_Rowley 9 месяцев назад

      Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. The PNG1150 is perfect to learn to DW SUP on. It paddles up on foil at very low speed, and flies comfortably on short fetch, small bump bay runs. Plus it's easy to turn. In the ocean the PNG1300 would be better, it's more efficient and will run faster with swells🤙

      I don't have a hr monitor on. I know it gets pretty high. Flat water starts are an ATP-CP exercise. I feel the heart after the sprint. Mast depends on the board and foil setup. I moved it back an inch to reduce early lifting and allow building more speed first.

The 100-105L sizes would be more Intermediate level for your weight. If you are new to this, get a massive foil like the Axis PNG1150 or PNG1300. Great videos, so necessary for all of us normal mortals wanting to get into sup dw foiling. Question I am 87kg and have done some dws on 14x26 sup. Sup surf foiling on a 6.4x30 132l. What size would be good for me? Wind bumps 20 to 30 knots, quiet moving ocean water in the Canary Islands. And should I go with hand paddles and narrower or wider and with a paddle? I tried to stand up on a 91l 6.0x24 and impossible. And where can I order hand paddles? Can I use the normal ones used for swimming? Riding armstrong foils, ordered now MA1750 AR 7.5 so board should suit these Armstrong foils which like to be ridden more forward in the box. Thx a million for your advice.

    • @Jeff_Rowley
      @Jeff_Rowley Год назад

      Thanks mate. Ok, you have 3 things going for you- foil experience, sup paddling experience and downwind bump experience - so you will learn faster than anyone. Plus excellent local conditions. You're the same weight as me. Board depends on what you can get or build. Get the longest and narrowest board you can around 115-125L to start. They paddle up on foil faster. 7'6 X 20" or 21". The foil and length makes them stable enough. All the foil board brands are making boards like this now. Good foil to learn on- you will very quickly be overfoiled on the 1750 in those conditions. 🤙

      @Jeff_Rowley Год назад

      Thanks mate. The 1150 turns better and has a lower speed range than the 1300, around 12-25kmh. If you have small slow bumps like on a bay, that can be an advantage. The 1300 has more glide and slightly higher speed range than the 1150, which makes it better in ocean bumps mixed with a bit of swell. 1150 is easier to paddle up of the two.

      Thanks mate. This is my training grounds for DW. Works in direct onshore wind. Run length depends on how far out to sea I paddle and when I get up. 1-4km. This one was late, not far out and really light. Just wanted to push my paddle up. Had to go round a point and ran into flat water at the end and burnt out. If I started further out it would have been better. Not currently tracking HR, but it was high from the paddle up and pumping.
